Award
Scholarship includes:
- Tuition fees
- Living allowance
- On-campus accommodation
- Medical insurance
- Teaching and research materials
- Travel to and from destination in China via the most cost-effective route through Beijing or Shanghai. Travel arrangements must be made by CBIE.
- Only selected candidates should contact CBIE about the travel arrangements.
Meals and accommodation will be provided during stopovers in Beijing/Shanghai en
route to final destination.
- The award will be for a period of 4 to 12 months from the date of arrival in China.
- The Chinese academic year starts in September and ends in early July, with a winter
vacation of about three weeks in January or February.
- It is understood that the recipients of the award will return to Canada upon completion
of their program.
The China Scholarship Council, in partnership with DFAIT, offers awards under the
Canada-China Scholars' Exchange Program (CCSEP) to Canadians who wish to study
and/or do research at participating Chinese universities in subject areas related to China.
Established in 1973, the CCSEP was the result of an undertaking by then Chinese
premier Zhou Enlai and Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau. Over the
past 36 years, 900 scholars have participated in the CCSEP. Canadian scholars have
brought new Canadian perspectives to their host country and acquired enhanced knowledge
and understanding of China.
Student
Applicants must:
- Be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada.
- Be faculty members at Canadian universities or students who have a bachelor's degree
or enrolled in a graduate program.
- Be proficient in written and oral Chinese unless otherwise exempted by their host
university in China.
- Undertake studies in an approved subject area in a Chinese university. Preference
will be given to those candidates whose research is related to the study of China.
Applications will be assessed on applicant's academic merit and proposed research plan.
- Scholarship recipients must submit a report to the Chinese Embassy in Canada concerning
his/her research or language learning in China within two months after completion
of scholarship. The host university is also expected to evaluate the recipient's
academic performance.
- Scholarship recipients must enroll at their host universities for the periods approved by the China Scholarship Council. Requests for deferred registration may not be accepted. Awards holders are not allowed to extend their awards in China.
Application Process

- Applicants must submit 2 copies of the following items prior to the deadline:
- A detailed study or research proposal indicating objectives, duration of the proposed
stay, methodology, etc.
- Two letters of reference from university professors or other academic personnel
- Official academic transcripts from college/university
- A copy of degree or certificate
(if the degree is not yet awarded, a letter verifying the graduation date is required
from the university.
- Note: Fine Arts applicants (painting, graphic arts,
sculpture and photography) must submit colour images of 6 original pieces of work
presented on a labeled CD. Music candidates must provide a CD not exceeding 30 minutes
in length containing samples of different musical styles performed or conducted
by the applicant.

A selection committee consisting of five members including two representatives from
the Chinese Embassy, two representatives from the Canadian academic community and
one representative from the Canadian government nominate a list of candidates to
the China Scholarship Council for approval and placement before April 30, 2010.
- Successful candidates will receive notification from the Chinese Embassy in Canada
by August 1, 2010.
- Successful candidates will receive admission notices from the Chinese university
along with other materials on visa and travel to China.
