Scholarship Types
This pilot program offers professional development scholarships for work missions, and graduate study and research at Canadian publicly funded institutions
Scholarship Value and Duration
  • For faculty members, a scholarship of $10,000 available for a period of 5 to 6 months to undertake study or research at the graduate level at a publicly funded Canadian institution
  • For faculty members wishing to study or conduct research at a Canadian public institution, a scholarship of $3,000 available for a minimum of 14 days
  • For International Liaison Officers (i.e. directors/managers of international relations/partnerships) (ILOs), a scholarship of $3,000 available for a minimum of 14 days (not including travel time) to visit a publicly funded Canadian college or university
Background

In 2007 Prime Minister Harper announced the launch of the Canada-CARICOM leadership scholarships program created to promote institutional linkages and provide scholarship opportunities for students from the CARICOM. This suite of scholarships programs has been expanded to include a faculty component intended to provide professional development opportunities for faculty members wishing to upgrade their knowledge and skills in Canada at the graduate level and for ILOs who are responsible for promoting international mobilization between their home countries and Canada.

The goal of the Faculty Leadership Pilot Program is to support international collaboration and mobilization of faculty members and staff between Canadian post-secondary institutions and those in the Caribbean through professional development opportunities.

Please note:
The Canada-CARICOM Leadership Scholarships Program is an extension of the Canadian Commonwealth Scholarships Programme and includes all member and associate member states of the Caribbean Community or CARICOM.


Canadian Institutions

Eligibility
  • The Canadian institution must apply on behalf of the scholarship candidate.
  • An existing exchange agreement between the Canadian institution and the participant's home institution is desirable. However, if there is no existing agreement, applications which involve a new or established collaboration between a Canadian institution and the scholarship applicant's home institution will be considered.
  • Candidates should be proficient in either English or French.
  • More than one exchange program at a given college or university may apply.
  • Anyone who has obtained Canadian citizenship or who has applied for permanent residency in Canada is not eligible for this award.
  • Candidates already participating in a study or research program or already enrolled to a degree program at a Canadian university or college are not eligible.
  • Priority will be given to candidates who have not previously participated in a DFAIT scholarship program.

Faculty members - 5-6 month research

  • The scholarship is available to teaching members of the academic staff of a recognized institution of a higher education in a participating country
  • The scholarship recipient will be employed as a teaching member of the academic staff at the institution where he/she is currently employed for at least one full academic year following the period of the award

Faculty members - minimum 14 days

  • The scholarship is available to academic staff wishing to study or conduct research at a Canadian public institution and must justify, in a one page proposal, the advantage of such a short term professional development experience.
  • The scholarship is for a minimum period of 14 days not including traveling days
  • The scholarship is available to teaching members of the academic staff of a recognized institution of a higher education in a participating country
  • The scholarship recipient will be employed as a teaching member of the academic staff at the institution where he/she is currently employed for at least one full academic year following the period of the award

International Liaison Officers (ILO) (i.e. directors/managers of international relations/partnerships) - minimum 14 days

  • The scholarship is available to ILOs who wish to learn about Canadian college and university programs in order to promote collaborations.
  • A project description including strategies and expected outcomes of the mission is required for the application
  • The scholarship is for a minimum period of 14 days not including traveling days.
  • Participants normally must have been employed in the field of international student mobility for a minimum period of one year. They must be willing to return to their institutions to continue promoting collaborations between Canada and their home institution.
Eligible Countries

Candidates must be citizens of one of the following countries: Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, Saint Kitt's, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos.

Conditions

Conditions for faculty members

  • Awards are conditional on receipt of the appropriate visa for the faculty member's stay in Canada.
  • Faculty members can arrive in Canada and begin their graduate studies in the fall of 2010
  • A faculty member cannot normally hold any other major scholarship.
  • The scholarship will be paid by cheque made out and mailed to the Canadian institution and not to the faculty member
  • Payment will be made in one installment upon receipt of the visa and proof of medical coverage in Canada

Conditions for ILOs

  • Awards are conditional on receipt of the appropriate visa for the ILOs stay in Canada.
  • An ILO cannot normally hold any other major scholarship or scholarship.
  • The scholarship will be paid by cheque made out and mailed to the Canadian college or university and not to the ILO.
  • Payment will be made in one installment upon receipt of the visa and proof of medical coverage in Canada.

Application Process

How to Apply
Canadian institutions must complete the CBIE online application form by submitting it electronically. Paper applications will not be accepted.
  • Please enter your data in the fields provided, following the instructions for each item.
  • Upon completion, verify your data prior to submitting.
  • To obtain a hard copy for your records, prior to submitting, you may print the form using the print function of your browser. Note that CBIE does not require a hard copy.
  • Click SUBMIT button to provide your application electronically to CBIE.

Canadian institutions must submit the following required documents to CBIE, prior to the deadline.

  • Curriculum vitae of supervisor of the candidate during the research exchange visit (Maximum 5 pages).
  • Proof of citizenship of the candidate (passport copy).
  • Current proof of full-time employment in exchange partner (home) institution of scholarship candidate (a short letter from the department or institution, on letterhead, dated in the last 6 months stating that the candidate is currently a full time faculty member).
  • Declaration signed by both the Director of the Exchange program and the supervisor of the candidate at the Canadian institution (Available at the end of the online application).

Short term - 2 week program applications must include the submission of a project description outlining

  • For ILOs - a project description including strategies and expected outcomes of the mission.
  • For academic staff - a one page proposal outlining the advantage of such a short term professional development experience.
Mandatory and eligible expenses
Mandatory expenses include:
  • Visa and immigration expenses
  • Economy, round-trip airfare
  • Health insurance
  • Monthly living allowance
  • Required books, supplies and equipment – not computers
Eligible expenses include:
  • Ground transportation to the airport in the home country and from the airport to the host institution in Canada
  • Optional administration fee (Maximum $300) for the Canadian university or college to cover expenses associated with the program
  • Telecommunications (long distance) for research purposes
  • Conference participation within Canada (conference fees; if applicable, travel and accommodation in a city outside the host institution)
  • Student services fees such as library card, access to on-campus medical facilities

For the scholarship directed to faculty members, tuition is NOT an allowable expense; it is expected that faculty members continue to pay tuition to their home institution.

Financial reporting is not required.

Deadline

This competition is now open. Deadline for CARICOM members is June 17, 2010 Deadline for Haiti, in the context of the Canada-Haiti Scholarship Initiative, is July 26, 2010.
